Top 10 Volcanoes in Algeria
Few people associate Algeria with volcanoes, yet the deep Sahara holds dramatic volcanic fields β eroded plugs, cones, and lava domes rising from desert plateaus. Most cluster in the Hoggar (Ahaggar) massif around Tamanrasset.
1. Atakor volcanic field
A high plateau studded with phonolite plugs and necks β the eroded throats of ancient volcanoes β that form the iconic Hoggar skyline.
2. Assekrem
The most famous viewpoint in the Atakor, a volcanic high point whose sunrise over the plug landscape is legendary among desert travellers.
3. Ilamane
A sheer volcanic spire near Assekrem, one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the Sahara.
4. Tahat
The highest peak in Algeria, rising from the volcanic Hoggar massif β the roof of the Sahara.
5. Adrar Hadriane
A prominent volcanic summit in the Atakor group, a landmark for routes across the plateau.
6. Tin Tarabine area cones
Eroded volcanic relief on the eastern Hoggar, remote and rarely visited.
7. Manzaz volcanic field
A younger volcanic field northeast of the Hoggar with well-preserved scoria cones and lava flows.
8. In Ezzane / eastern Hoggar plugs
Isolated volcanic necks marking the desert's eastern reaches.
9. Tahalra volcanic field
A southern Hoggar field of cones and flows on the route toward the Tassili.
10. Hoggar phonolite domes (general)
Across the massif, dozens of unnamed domes and plugs make the entire region one extended volcanic monument.
Why Algeria's volcanoes are special
These are not erupting volcanoes β they are deeply eroded ones. Millions of years of desert weathering stripped the soft slopes away and left the hard volcanic cores standing as towers and spires. The result is a landscape that looks sculpted rather than built.
Visiting the Hoggar
Tamanrasset is the gateway. Travel into the Atakor requires a licensed local agency, permits, a 4x4, and a guide β this is deep desert with no infrastructure. Trips are typically organised expeditions of several days, camping under exceptional dark skies. Independent travel is not advisable or generally permitted.
Timing and safety
Go October to March; summer Saharan heat is dangerous. Carry far more water than you think, follow your guide on routes and security advice, and respect Tuareg communities and sites. Take nothing β these volcanic landscapes are protected within Ahaggar National Park.
